Exploring Aviation: A Look Back at our Student Tours

This spring we’ve been fortunate to host several tours at Lethbridge Airport (YQL). From elementary-aged children to young adults exploring a career in the trades. Students have had the chance to look behind the scenes at YQL and learn about what it takes to keep an airport running each day.

In April, we had the privilege of hosting the CAREERS Young Women in Trades and Technologies for the morning as a part of their spring break camp. Our crew provided the girls with tours of the maintenance shop, terminal, and runway. Airline Pilot, Sheena Bennett, also gave the girls a glimpse into her career in aviation and time with Excel Flight Training Inc.

In May, students from the Westwind Alternate School visited the terminal for a hands-on tour that had them engaging with the security and screening team, exploring our maintenance vehicles and delving into the intricacies of flight at the flight school, Excel Flight Training, in the historic Air West hanger.

Conversations with the Security and Screening Team: The airport terminal is a bustling hub, and behind the scenes, there's a dedicated security and screening team working tirelessly to ensure passenger safety. During the student tour, they had the unique opportunity to engage with these professionals, who shared insights into their crucial roles. Students learned about the procedures and technologies used to maintain the highest level of security at the airport.

Exploring the Maintenance Vehicles: Maintaining a pristine airfield requires an array of specialized equipment. As part of their tour, students had the chance to get up close and personal with the maintenance vehicles responsible for keeping the runways in top shape. From powerful sweepers to snowplows and de-icing machines, they discovered how these vehicles play an essential role in ensuring safe and efficient operations.

Visiting the Flight School: For many aspiring aviators, the dream of flying begins at a flight school. During the tour, students entered into the world of pilots at Excel Flight Training, where they learned about the intricacies of aircraft operations. Knowledgeable instructor, Roland Morton, guided them through the basics of aviation, providing valuable insights into the principles of flight, navigation, and the various components that make a plane soar through the sky.

We hope this hands-on experience left a lasting impression on the students, sparking their curiosity and igniting their passion for aviation. Lethbridge Airport remains committed to nurturing the next generation of aviation enthusiasts and inspiring future leaders in the field.

Thank you to our staff and support services that volunteered their time to help facilitate the tours.
